Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has said that government alone can neither support universities to the extent required nor keep them at the current level.

He maintained that a lot ought to come from the alumni and the private sector as obtained in great institutions all over the world.

The vice president was speaking in Lagos Friday at the 2017 Distinguished Alumni Awards and celebration of the University of Lagos.

He said: “…government alone cannot support universities to the extent that is required, or keep them even at the current level. A lot will have to come from the Alumni and the private sector. That’s how great universities all over the world are run.”

The vice president said he was excited to see a lot of committed alumni of the University of Lagos “who want to see to it that our university goes from glory to glory.”

He said the institution’s fund raising project had clearly shown the way to go with respect to developing the nation’s universities.

He congratulated all the awardees, saying that “not only are their achievements worthy of celebration, the fact that you come from such a great institution and honoured by the institution is real reason for us to congratulate you and rejoice with you.”
