The Peoples Democratic Party in Osun State has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress of being behind the attack on Chief Ademola Adeleke’s campaign train in Gbongan, the headquarters of Ayedaade Local Government Area of the state.
The PDP in a statement issued on Sunday by its Chairman, Mr. Soji Adagunodo, claimed that hoodlums believed to be working for the APC attacked PDP’s campaign in Gbongan and also at Ode Omu on Saturday in their efforts to frustrate the party’s candidate in the July 8 by-election to fill Osun West Senatorial District’s vacant seat at the Senate.
He said that hoodlums, who were armed with cutlasses, guns and other dangerous weapons invaded the campaign venue and inflicted injuries on some persons but he said that they were eventually resisted by hordes of residents of the town, who came out to repel the attack.
The PDP chairman also said that some vehicles were vandalised by the hoodlums but stated that the attack would have been worse but for the rain which started at the same time and drove them away.
The statement read, ” Armed thugs, who are suspected to be members of the APC attacked the campaign train of PDP candidate for Osun West Senatorial District by-election, Otunba Demola Adeleke, at Gbongan and Odeomu in Ayedaade Local Government Area of Osun state.
“The thugs who came with various dangerous weapons damaged vehicles and injured people. However, luck ran out for the thugs as the people of the town came out in large numbers and resisted them.”
He, however, said the party would not retaliate nor foment trouble but stated that its candidate was focused on working hard to win the by-election ahead to show that his popularity was based on the love the electorate had for him and his late brother, Senator Isiaka Adeleke.
