A former governor of Jigawa State, Mr. Sule Lamido, has faulted the ongoing war against corruption spearheaded by President Muhammadu Buhari, saying it is just a “farce.”
Lamido, who governed Jigawa between May 29, 2007 and May 29, 2015 under the Peoples Democratic Party, said that Buhari cannot be fighting corruption after he worked under Nigeria’s military dictator, General Sani Abacha, as chairman of Petroleum Trust Fund.
Speaking in an interview with the BBC Hausa service, Lamido said, “He (Buhari) worked under Abacha. In fact, he was the closest to the late military ruler and when it comes to corruption, everybody knows where Abacha’s government stands.
“Buhari is just making noise. There’s no iota of truth in the so-called commitment to the improvement of security and halting graft in the country.”
Few months after the All Progressives Congress became the ruling party in 2015, Lamido and his sons were arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for allegedly siphoning billions of naira from Jigawa State’s coffers.
They spent four days in Kano prison.
