As the issue of President Muhammadu Buhari’s extended stay in the United Kingdom on medical vacation continues to engage public discussion in the country, members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) loyal to the Senator Ali Modu Sheriff have embarked on prayers for the president’s recovery.
A special prayer session on the president’s health formed the highpoint of a town hall meeting for stakeholders of the Sheriff faction of the PDP in the South-south geo-political zone held at Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State.
Addressing his loyalists Sheriff, who personally led the prayer session, stressed that Buhari remains the President and Commander-in-Chief of the federation notwithstanding the fact that he is member of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“We don’t wish sickness for anybody,” the PDP factional chairman pointed out. “The position of president is for one (person) at a time; he (Buhari) is our president today, regardless of political party differences. So, we must pray for him to recover from his present health condition.”
Earlier, Sheriff described the PDP as a law abiding political party which would respect and abide by whatever verdict the appellate court would return today (Friday) in the suit on the leadership crisis rocking the party across the country.
According to him, the party lost most of the elections in 2015 as a result of impunity, saying he was in the saddle as chairman to end the reign of impunity, which he claimed did not go down well with many PDP governors.
He also said he was determined to take the party back to the grassroots where internal democracy would thrive and the emergence of candidates through genuine democratic process.
He blamed the declining influence and electoral success of the PDP on indiscipline and impunity including imposition of candidates.
Sheriff said: “At a stage, PDP had 29 governors but today we have just 12 because of impunity. If you elect a candidate, somebody in Abuja will substitute his name for another. They can’t do that with me. I don’t need any hand out; I can run my house, I can pay my children’s fees.
“I was governor for eight years, I left the senate as a leader. I have done everything that needs to be done, what is left for me now is to return the PDP back to the owners. Take it to the grassroots so that it will be you that will choose your leaders.”
