Abia State Government has banned the use of revenue agents in collecting Internally Generated Revenue from 2017.
The ban was contained in a press statement issued Friday by the Deputy Governor, Sir Ude Okochukwu who doubles as the Chairman of the state’s Internally Generated Revenue.
According to the statement, the decision was part of strategies of government to plug financial leakages in its revenue collection machinery.
It sternly warned revenue collectors who masquerade as agents of government to forthwith, stop harassing residents or be dealt with according to the law.
The statement read in part: “This is to inform all concerned that, the IGR Policy of the state did not provide for appointment of revenue agents.
“MDAs are by this notice directed not to appoint any agent for the year 2017, as Abia State Government will not be held liable for any contravention.
“All Revenue matters must be directed to the IGR council. Please be guided.”
The statement further warned residents against paying any money to any revenue agent under whatever guise.
” Abians particularly residents of Aba and Umuahia, are therefore requested to avoid paying any revenue agent or ‘consultant’ who claims to be acting on behalf of the state from the fiscal year 2017 and going forward.
