Worried by the worsening condition of federal roads in Abia State, Gov Okezie Ikpeazu, has urged the federal government to urgently declare a state of emmergency on them to assuage the plights of residents.
Ikpeazu, who made the appeal when he received the House of Representatives Committee on Works, regretted that federal roads across the state had continued to deteriorate without any reasonable efforts by the federal government to salvage them.
He lamented the the state had recorded enormous human and economic loss following increasing cases of carnages on the deplorable roads.
The governor noted with regret, saying but for the continuous intervention of his administration through palliative repair works, virtually all federal roads in the state would have collapsed completely.
“As at today, Aba-Owerri road is the only entry and exit route into Aba, which is the commercial hub of Abia and states around, and even that was made possible because the state continues to intervene on the road.
“Both Port Harcourt and Ikot Ekpene Roads are completely closed to vehicular traffic. This has made it difficult to visit Abia State from Akwa Ibom and Rivers State through Ikot Ekpene, Opobo and Port Harcourt road.”
