Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Caretaker Committee, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, on Saturday, accused the Senator Ali Modu Sheriff’s faction of the party of a plot to turn the nation into a one-party state under the All Progressives Congress.
Makarfi alleged in an interview with journalists in Kaduna that Sherrif’s intention was to first discredit the judiciary and later made sure that Nigeria was turned into one-party state.
He also alleged that Sherrif deliberately raised insinuations that could affect the judgment pending before the Appeal Court in Port Harcourt and also discrediting the judiciary.
He said, “We as caretaker committee of the PDP we have absolute faith and confidence in the judiciary and we know that ultimately justice will be done, the judges cannot be fooled by these antics.
“We equally believe that as democrats in PDP we will continue to depend on the judiciary as the institution that can protect its own integrity and I believe that they are capable of doing that.”
Meanwhile, the Board of Trustees of the PDP has said that it will not support any move that could lead to the changing of the name of the party through the formation mega party.
The board spoke as a result of the ongoing talks between the national caretaker committee of the party headed by Makarfi and some members of the opposition party.
Makarfi, while inaugurating the committee which is headed by a former Minister of Information, Prof. Jerry Gana, said that the committee would discuss with others within and outside the PDP on how to wrestle power from the ruling All Progressives Congress in 2019.
Most of those contacted by the committee were said to have insisted that the party must be ready to change its name before they could either return to it or join.
But the Chairman of the Board, Senator Walid Jibrin, who spoke with one of our correspondents on behalf of the BoT, said that the board would resist the move to change the name of the party.
He said the party despite its many challenges, remain a brand name which he said would still be accepted by Nigerians in 2019.
He said, “No, we won’t allow anyone change the name of the PDP. It is a brand name that is love by all and known by majority of Nigerians. You don’t change a winning name.”
