A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos, Mr Victor Akande, on Friday appealed to politicians in Rivers to avoid violence in Saturday’s legislative rerun elections in the state.

Akande (PDP-Ojo I) at the Lagos State House of Assembly made the plea in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos while reacting to the threats of violence by gladiators from PDP and All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to him, where two elephants fight, the grass will suffer.
“It is sad that our political atmosphere is still bedeviled with this kind of situation that politicians threaten violence. Everyone knows that Rivers State is a PDP State.

“They (politicians) should do everything with decorum; they should remember that where two elephants fight, the grass would suffer,’’ he said.
The lawmaker urged the people and politicians in Rivers to avoid bloodshed, noting that peaceful elections were important to give the residents representation in both the state and federal legislative houses.
Akande urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a free and fair election.
NAN reports that the rerun is sequel to court nullification of the election of some senators, members of the House of Representatives and the Rivers State House of Assembly.
INEC had organised a rerun on March 19 but the polls were cancelled in six local government areas over violence and irregularities.
The inconclusive elections, which were subsequently rescheduled for July 30, were equally postponed over tension before they were fixed for Dec. 10.
