A meeting by the stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the South-East ended in a stalemate on Sunday in Enugu.
The party leaders met ahead of its national convention to take decisions on various positions zoned to the area.
The South-East zone got the National Organising Secretary, National Youth Leader and Deputy National Financial Secretary.
However, a source hinted DAILY POST that the stakeholders could not arrive at a common ground on which states would produce the positions.
The meeting, which commenced at the Enugu Government House was later moved to the party’s secretariat located at the GRA.
“The meeting was ended to give room for more discussions; they may not meet again at this expanded level before the convention, but the contentious issues are likely to be resolved before then”, the source hinted.
Meanwhile, briefing journalists, the chairman of the party in the zone, Mr. Austin Umahi said they had passed a vote of confidence on the Deputy Senate President, Chief Ike Ekweremadu.
The meeting was attended by Governors Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Okechi Ikpeazu of Enugu and Abia States, respectively, Ekweremadu, former Governors Peter Obi, Sam Egwu, among others.
Umahi declared that we have “passed a vote of absolute confidence on Ekweremadu our leader. He is a true Igbo son; he is doing well in the National Assembly. We are proud of him.”
He added that “we will never be intimidated; he is our trusted son; he is our son with whom we are well pleased.”
He equally lauded Governors elected under the party’s platform in the zone, noting that they had put up excellent performance.
“We are proud of them; when you look at the indexes, they have done very well.
“There is no other party in the South-East; they have shown themselves that they are true representatives of the party”, Umahi further stated.
On the zoning of the party’s positions ahead of the convention, he stated that “there is harmony; all the states were equally represented; we are entering Port-Harcourt with one voice, formidable; nobody can toy with the South-East.”
He was, however, silent on details of the zoning, fueling speculations that there were still areas of disagreement.
The PDP is expected to hold its national convention to elect a new set of leaders on August 17 in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.
