The National Coordinator of the Oodua Peoples Congress, Gani Adams, has debunked the allegation that he received N1.6billion from President Goodluck Jonathan to campaign for his second term bid.
The OPC leader, in a statement on Wednesday, affirmed that the former Oyo State Publicity Secretary of the congress, Adesina Akinpelu’s claim should be ignored.

Akinpelu had called for Adams’ resignation for allegedly turning OPC into a political group.

Reacting to the claim, Adams refuted the receipt of the sum of N1.6 billion from either President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan or any other individual in this regards.

“It is indeed ridiculous for any right-thinking person to claim or believe that the president would give the sum of N1.6billion to an individual,” the statement said.

“It must also be noted that Otunba Gani Adams does not have direct access to the monies of Oodua People’s Congress. The organization has a very open and credible accounting mechanism for all its activities. Otunba Gani Adams, as a notable Yoruba leader, has risen above such mundane false allegations.”

Adams said Akinpelu, former publicity secretary of the Oyo State chapter of OPC, was dismissed by the body in 2013 for gross misconduct and ever since has nothing to do with the group.

‘He was neither a member of the national coordinating council nor the spokesperson of Oodua People’s Congress,” it said.

“For the records, he, in fact, ceased to be a member of the OPC, Oyo State chapter, since 2013 following his dismissal for gross misconduct and at no time did he rise to the position of national publicity secretary.”

According to the statement, Adams remained the national coordinator and leader of Oodua People’s Congress; as well as the leader of Oodua Progressive Union.
