Governorship candidates of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Dr. Dakuku Peterside and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Nyesom Wike, in Rivers State, yesterday in Port Harcourt, signed a fresh peace accord, promising to be law abiding before and after the elections on Saturday.
The peace deal was brokered by the Commissioner of Police, Mr Hosea Karma. He appealed to all parties to shun violence, promising that the Police would continue to protect lives and property.
“We are all brothers.
Lets us be able to shake hands after this election. Let us participate in this election without bitterness. Rivers State will remain after the elections. Tribes will remain after the elections. Please, let us not do anything that will bring shame to us,” he pleaded.
Meanwhile, Peterside, has assured citizens of the state of maximum protection during the governorship election in the state.
Peterside, during a town hall meeting in Abuloma, urged the people to take solace in the fact that all forms of persecution, intimidation and threat to their lives will soon be a thing of the past because Nigeria has changed for the better.
He said: “Those who unleashed violence and mayhem on the people of Rivers State during the March 28 presidential and National Assembly elections are already aware of a new Nigeria that abhors lawlessness and impunity. So, I am calling on our people to come out and participate fully in the all-important process of electing the next governor of Rivers State.
“I am sure that everybody remembered what happened on March 28. They used the army, police, DSS and militants, seized result sheets and hijacked ballot boxes. They also arrested many people, all to favour the PDP, but God had a different plan. Despite the intimidation and stuffing of ballot boxes, God said it was not time for Goodluck Jonathan to continue in office, so Gen Muhammadu Buhari won the election. Can anybody challenge God?”
